Dream for America Rallies 200+ Students in Rural Virginia Ahead of Redistricting Referendum

Just days before Virginia’s redistricting referendum, Dream for America (DFA) brought together more than 200 students at Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) for a packed, high-energy event focused on democracy, representation, and the role young people play in shaping the future of the country.
The event featured remarks from DFA Founder William He and former Virginia House Minority Leader David Toscano, who challenged students in a conversation about civic responsibility, the importance of fair representation, and why participation in democratic processes matters — especially at the local level.
Held in a rural community outside Charlottesville, the turnout underscored a growing appetite among young Americans for meaningful political engagement and open dialogue around complex issues. Students asked questions, shared perspectives, and were encouraged to stay informed, remain involved, and make their voices heard in the referendum.
“Moments like this remind us that young people are not disengaged — they’re looking for opportunities to be part of something bigger,” said He. “When you create space for real conversation, they show up. How can we blame someone for not subscribing to our world view if they’ve literally never even heard it?”
The WAHS event is part of Dream for America’s broader effort to expand its presence on high school and college campuses nationwide, combining digital reach with in-person organizing. With a rapidly growing network of student leaders across all 50 states and over 1 billion views across social platforms, DFA is focused on turning online engagement into real-world impact.
As the organization continues to scale, DFA plans to host additional events, launch new chapters, and train student organizers — building long-term infrastructure to support youth civic engagement and pro-democracy activism across the country.
“This is just the beginning,” He added. “As we approach America’s 250th birthday — I’m excited to keep traveling across the country, meeting young people where they are, and having honest conversations about the state of America and the work still to do to create a more perfect union.”
